European Union again delays decision on Albania, North Macedonia accession talks

European Union again delays decision on Albania, North Macedonia accession talks”

The Netherlands, now presiding European Union, supported a potential compromise that would have allowed talks to begin with North Macedonia while putting Albania on hold, but in the end, leaders also could not agree on separating the bids by the two countries.

European Union leaders have failed to agree to launch accession talks with northern Macedonia and Albania, NOVA TV reported.

Summit talks ended without a decision despite seven hours of backroom haggling, with French President Emmanuel Macron leading opposition to the two Balkan states being given a date to begin the long process of accession negotiations.

French President Emanuel Macron blocked the bid at an European Union summit in Brussels.

He said Macedonians would now "decide the road we are going to take", without specifying what he would recommend.

Zaev echoed Tusk's sentiments on Saturday, saying, "We are victims of the EU's historic mistake".

"We must admit we failed to reach consensus because three states refused to invite both countries to start negotiations", Lithuania's President Gitanas Nauseda told reporters.

The decision to begin talks had widespread support among the bloc's member states, but key opponent France, with support from the Netherlands and Denmark, blocked the move. Over dinner at the summit, everyone except Macron backed opening membership talks with North Macedonia, which is judged to have met European Union targets for a host of reforms and ending disputes with its neighbors.

"I am utterly convinced that these two countries have made enormous efforts to meet European norms and I would very much like them to receive a positive signal", she said Thursday. He urges the Community to reform its membership rules before the accession of new Member States.

Mrs Merkel championed North Macedonia's cause earlier this year when it agreed to change its name from Macedonia to settle a row with Greece.
