First look at NASA's next generation spacesuits for moon exploration in 2024

First look at NASA's next generation spacesuits for moon exploration in 2024”

Earlier Tuesday, the US Space Agency unveiled designs for what will be its next-generation spacesuit, known as the xEMU.

Boeing previous year delivered the propulsion system that will give the Orion the ability to travel thousands of miles beyond the moon and back on the first unmanned mission using the SLS.

Dustin Gohmert, project manager for Orion Crew Survival Systems, followed her into the spotlight, wearing a suit prototype designed for use during launch, re-entry and in-flight emergencies. Astronauts will wear them while traveling to and from the moon, and they'll be able to live inside the suits for days should a spacecraft experience sudden depressurization. The suits are created to work in temperatures ranging from 250°F down to minus 250°F and potentially even colder places around the lunar south pole, where Nasa is aiming to send astronauts.

But NASA said Tuesday it is going to try again for an all-female spacewalk on October 21, this time with Koch and fellow astronaut Jessica Meir. "After Artemis III, the agency plans to transition responsibility for production, assembly, testing, sustaining and maintenance of a fleet of flight and training spacesuits and associated hardware to U.S. Industry", it said in a statement.

"The xEMU suit improves on the suits previously worn on the moon during the Apollo era and those now in use for spacewalks outside the International Space Station", the agency said in a statement.

Under pressure from the White House in May, NASA brought up the launch date to send humans to the moon by four years, to 2024, and told Congress it needed an additional $1.6bn in the $21bn budget for 2020 to prepare.

Kristine Davids squats to pick up a rock to show the flexibility of the exploration extravehicular mobility unit.

NASA said an improved feature of the Orion suit is it can keep astronauts alive for almost a week if spacecraft cabin pressure fails, allowing crews a window to return to Earth in an emergency. "Now we're actually going to be able to walk on the surface of the moon, which is very different than our suits of the past", he said.

These particular suits are created to be worn during take-off and landing, and for protection within the spacecraft and the ISS.

During lunar expeditions, NASA said a team of crew members will remain aboard the Gateway while a separate team will explore the surface of the moon.

The orange spacesuit will be used for launch and reentry aboard the NASA Orion spacecraft.
