Johnson & Johnson recalls lot of baby powder

Johnson & Johnson recalls lot of baby powder”

J&J is voluntarily recalling the lot, #22318RB, and encouraging people who bought the product to discontinue use.

Meanwhile, J&J has started a "rigorous, thorough investigation" into the asbestos found in its powder and will work with the FDA to learn more about the testing result.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer believes the link between asbestos and mesothelioma to be strong enough to say that it causes cancer.

After the FDA tests last month, J&J issued a statement that stated their products do not - broadly speaking - contain asbestos.

J&J has already settled some of the lawsuits in which plaintiffs claim they were given cancer by the talc-based personal care products, but 15,500 suits remain, according to a July filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Asbestos can naturally form alongside talc, the mineral that is the core ingredient of Baby Powder, in nature, but mines are supposed to be regularly checked to ensure that this isn't happening. The findings of the investigation stated that Baby Powder periodically tested positive for tiny amounts of asbestos between 1971 and the early 2000s.

The recall comes after repeated statements from the New Jersey-based company that the product is safe and asbestos-free.

Numerous suits are ongoing, but have already cost the company many billions of dollars.

The recall only applies to the United States, a spokesman said.

The recalled lot of 22-ounce bottles is.22318RB.

The company said it could not confirm whether the sample was cross-contaminated, whether the product's seal was intact, or whether the sample was taken from an authentic bottle of Johnson & Johnson talcum powder.

J&J said in February that it had received subpoenas and inquiries related to its iconic baby-powder products from the U.S. Justice Department, the SEC and the top Democrat on the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

The recall, which is limited to one lot of baby powder bottles produced and shipped in the United States a year ago, comes in response to a US Food and Drug Administration test that found levels of chrysotile asbestos contamination in samples from a bottle purchased online, according to the company.
