Kyle Lowry receives contract extension from Toronto Raptors

Kyle Lowry receives contract extension from Toronto Raptors”

But it would be a mistake to say he's satisfied.

On Tuesday the Raptors announced they signed the All-Star guard to an extension, and according to his agent Mark Bartelstein, the deal is for one year and worth $31 million.

Still, it's the loss of Leonard, Toronto's best player last season, that's likely to have the biggest impact on how the Raptors fare in their quest for repeat title after beating the Golden State Warriors in six games.

"Why not? I mean with Kawhi being gone it seems pretty unlikely". While he was with the team in Quebec City and then in Japan, he was mostly a spectator as he continued to recover from the thumb surgery he underwent in late-July.

The extension, a one year-deal that will pay him $30 million for this 15th season in the National Basketball Association at the age of 34, is both a measure of what he has already done for the team and what they believe he still can do for them. "He is a competitor, a victor at every level and the engine that our players and city feed off".

Raptors coach Nick Nurse feels Lowry's extension is good for the entire team.

"It's not impossible to be proud of the moment, be happy with what you accomplished, and still want more", he said.

As colleagues of mine have previously opined, there are many positive aspects to the Lowry deal for all parties involved.

"We've got some work to do", he said. We're getting a super ultra-competitive guy, nobody plays harder. "Nobody plays harder. To me, he just keeps getting better and better". "I think obviously he's playing at a high level, he's continuing to play at a high level, and there's no reason to expect him not to".

"It was an opportunity that worked out for both sides", Lowry, 33, said.

Locking down Lowry was a priority for the Raptors management who have already seen the departure of star Kawhi Leonard to the Los Angeles Clippers this off-season.

"He takes incredibly good care of his body, the way he eats, what he does in the summer", Webster said. So we talked early in the summer and we knew this was something that was really important to him, and it was something that was really important to us. "As a competitor, as a player, you don't always love it but you have to understand it and see what the plan is, understand it and be on board with it".

With Lowry and Marc Gasol both full-time participants in Tuesday's practice, conversation naturally turned to roles within the team and Lowry, despite his standing as longest serving member of the roster, anticipates big change there for himself.

"I think we're way ahead in some areas", Nurse said.

"So I think there's a lot of buy-in here". It's going to be interesting how we play. "When we get the crew out here that's been here together, there's just so much of the playbook that I can go to that I couldn't have done a year ago at this time".

"I've got to be a lot more of a scorer", Lowry said of his new responsibilities. "I think, for us it's a little different this year, I would say that there's two (or) three things we're trying to patch in". I think our guys understand that.

"It's going to change", Lowry said of his role going forward.

And bet on Lowry being in the middle of all of it, just as he has been for the first seven years as a Raptor. They still have Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka and Fred VanVleet going into the past year of their deals.

But the National Basketball Association season is a long one and last year Lowry's averaged four-year lows in points per 100 possessions (20.1); true-shooting percentage (56.2), win shares per 48 minutes (.144) and other advanced statistical measures.

Asked about playing off of VanVleet this coming year, Lowry sounded downright excited about the idea. Nurse said McCaw was scheduled to have an MRI later on Wednesday but didn't think it was a serious issue. In exchange, Toronto gave him a larger annual salary than he would have commanded on the open market, while also rewarding one of the most iconic players in franchise history.
