New Brexit deal widely welcomed by Irish side”

He adds that open talks between the United Kingdom and Canada would be allowed only after the U.K. leaves the European Union on October 31, if Johnson's schedule is passed by the British House of Commons.

Speaking at the On the Brink of Brexit conference in Dublin on Thursday, Ms McGowan said that Northern Ireland needed a deal that protects the all-island economy, the Good Friday Agreement, and one that gives unfettered access to Great Britain's market.

"This deal puts Northern Ireland, yes, in the United Kingdom customs union but applies de facto all the EU customs code, it also puts us in the Value-Added Tax regime, it also puts us in the single market regime for a large part of goods and agri-food, without an consent upfront". He added that there were unresolved issues with both the European Union and the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) who support the Conservative minority government in Britain's parliament.

The DUP, which supports Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative government in the British parliament, holds major sway in whether a divorce agreement can get through the House of Commons.

However, Tusk said in comments broadcast by Polish broadcaster TVN 24 that "certain doubts have appeared from the British side", a reference to Johnson's need to win over politicians who fear he may have conceded too much.

However, other evidence suggests most voters have not changed their mind: 50% of the public want to respect the referendum result, 42% want Britain to remain in the European Union and 8%said they don't know, the largest Brexit poll since 2016 carried out by Comres found.

"There will be no border on the island of Ireland and the [EU's] single market will be protected", Juncker said.

"From what we know, it seems the Prime Minister has negotiated an even worse deal than Theresa May's, which was overwhelmingly rejected".

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin - who was also in Brussels, where he attended a meeting of the European Union liberal party grouping - welcomed the draft Brexit deal.

He says that Johnson's proposed deal would provide more time to sort out the U.K.'s trade relationship with the European Union but also with Canada.

The CBI represents about 180,000 business across the United Kingdom and about 75 per cent of the top 100 businesses, and hundreds of small firms in Northern Ireland. "Four out of the five parties in Northern Ireland want it up and running?"

This situation will continue until a new agreement on the future relationship is reached, or Northern Ireland votes down the deal. Earlier on Thursday Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party signalled it did not accept key aspects of the agreement being drafted.

Mr Dodds also asked whether the Government's support for a majority vote at Stormont on Northern Ireland's consent to its customs arrangements in the future meant the end of vetoes in the Assembly.

For Johnson's government, the hardest step now awaits - getting the Commons to approve the deal.

After London and Brussels announced the agreement, the DUP said its objections remain unchanged.

Mr Varadkar made a plea to unionists to get behind the deal yesterday but the DUP will vote against it. He'll be hoping that he can convince enough former Tory "rebels, ' as well as Labour MPs who represent 'Leave" constituencies, to back his deal.
