Paul Gascoigne cleared of sexual assault after kissing woman on train

Paul Gascoigne cleared of sexual assault after kissing woman on train”

Former England global Paul Gascoigne has been found not guilty of sexual assault after kissing a woman on a train.

Speaking about the alternative charge, she said: "You may think, 14 months after this incident, this is really a sexual assault, or nothing".

Gascoigne, 52, who earned 57 caps for England between 1988 and 1998, was arrested on August 20, 2018 and charged on November 19 with allegedly sexually assaulting a woman on a train.

After she was kissed, the woman, who can not be named, was shocked and a fellow passenger challenged Gascoigne, saying: "What you have just done is sexual abuse".

Judge Peter Armstrong told Gascoigne: "You are now discharged and free to go".

The former World Cup star can apply to have his defence costs paid.

Miss Heeley said: "You can not be sure Mr Gascoigne had a sexual intent".

After the verdict was returned the ex-Newcastle and England midfielder thanked the judge, the jury and his dentist - an apparent reference to evidence earlier in the trial about him not having his false teeth in when he was on the train.

The Crown Prosecution Service said it had considered the charge before the case.

In her closing speech to the jury Michelle Heeley QC, defending, told jurors the former footballer kissed a woman who was not expecting it and did not like it, but that did not make him a sex offender.

She said: "In his own naive way, he thought he was making a larger woman have more body confidence".

She showed the jury photos of Gascoigne kissing fellow players and fans, and his character witnesses described him as tactile. The court heard he had been drinking beer at the time.
