Tesla Gets Green Light To Start Making Electric Vehicles In China”

Tesla, which has previously said it expects the US$2bn "Gigafactory" in Shanghai to produce 150,000 units per year, was on Thursday added to a list of approved automotive manufacturers published by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. In 2013, as a "final assembly and distribution point" for its electric vehicles sold in Europe, Tesla launched an 18,900-square meter facility in Tilburg, Holland. Song Gang, Director of Manufacturing for Tesla Greater China, said: "State Grid Shanghai Electric Power Company has started cooperating with us in all dimensions, and carried out preparatory work for the project in advance".

Tesla could start production at any moment, Zhang said, who did not respond immediately to a request for comment via e-mail. The $2billion factory it is establishing in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai is its first manufacturing site present overseas.

State Grid Corp of China has opened the first transmission line in a power connection project that increases electricity supply to the Tesla plant to a level required for preliminary production, according to a statement from the Chinese company's Shanghai branch.

Reuters stated earlier this month that Tesla was planning to launch production this month at its China plant.

Tesla intends to produce at least 1,000 Model 3s a week from the Shanghai factory by the end of this year, as it tries to boost sales in the world's biggest auto market and avoid higher import tariffs imposed on USA cars.

Permission to build the plant has been seen as a sign that Beijing is looking to open up its vehicle market.

China has excluded Tesla models on a 10% auto purchase tax regarded on August 30. Meanwhile, China excluded Tesla vehicles from a 10% tax on cars.
