Andy Murray relishing reunion with Stan Wawrinka in Antwerp final

Andy Murray relishing reunion with Stan Wawrinka in Antwerp final”

It was tough. He was playing huge from the back of the court... it was tricky but I am obviously happy to be back in a final.

Andy Murray battled past Romanian qualifier Marius Copil 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-4, at the European Open in Antwerp on Friday to reach his first singles semifinal in two years.

Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov is into his first career ATP final at the Stockholm Open, the 20-year-old overcoming Yuichi Sugita 7-5 6-2 to set up a meeting with Filip Krajinovic, who got the better of Pablo Carreno Busta over three sets.

Looking to force a tie-break in the second set, Humbert served a double fault to hand the Brit the set, before Murray raced into a 3-0 lead in the deciding set, going on to close out the match. "I certainly didn't expect it to come so soon since I started playing again".

The two-time Wimbledon champion converted the second and served out, securing victory with an ace, to reach his first semi-final since the French Open in 2017.

But the metal hip passed another stern examination, Copil throwing in plenty of drop shots to test Murray's movement in another encouraging step on the road back towards challenging the top. "I haven't played loads of matches in the last few years so when you get to the end of the match it's always hard to serve it out", Murray added.

Four rounds later, those two giants of the game - both of whom have been sidelined by injury for much of the past 2½ years - will contest Sunday's final. He sealed the win against Humbert after 2 hours, 22 minutes with an easy volley victor at the net.

Murray broke Humbert to lead 3-1 in the second and was pegged back to 3-3 and 5-5, when the two-time Wimbledon victor began to flex his elbow, which was feeling the effects of a hectic schedule.

The Scot has played four tournaments in just over four weeks and showed signs of fatigue and frustration in the opening set.
