Army Attacks 4 Terror Camps In PoK With Artillery Fire”

The Indian Army, on October 20, launched attacks on terrorist camps in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The first time India launched cross border operations to eliminate terrorist training camps in Pakistan was in 2016 in the aftermath of an attack on an army garrison in Uri in which 19 Indian soldiers had been killed.

Sources told the news agency that four launch pads in PoK's Neelam valley were targeted/destroyed, and four to five Pakistan Army soldiers have been killed and several have been injured. Defence expert PK Sehgal said, "Everyday Pakistan has been doing ceasefire on daily basis, yesterday also Pakistan tried ceasefire in Tangdhar, and it tried to infiltrate infiltrators by doing unprovoked firing in which two civilians and soldiers lost their lives".

Pakistan Army confirmed the Indian fire and alleged that civilians were "deliberately" targeted.

Officials said that nine other civilians were injured, adding that this was the highest death toll in 2019 in a single day of Indian shelling from across the dividing line.

Tensions between the two countries have flared and there has been intermittent cross-border firing since Aug 5 when New Delhi flooded Indian Kashmir with troops to quell unrest after it revoked the region's special autonomous status.

The civilian killed in the Pakistani firing has been identified as Mohd Sadiq (55).

Till September this year, Pakistan had committed more than 2,050 unprovoked ceasefire violations in which 21 people died, the centre had said last month.

It may be noted that Athmuqam is the district headquarters of Pakistan Army.

General Rawat also apprised Defence Minister Rajnath Singh of the situation on the ground regarding the targeting of the terror camps. The bridge has been named after a highly-decorated soldier of the Indian Army, Colonel Chewang Rinchen, who belonged to Ladakh. Those wounded are Mohd Maqbool (70), Mohd Shafi, (50) and Yusuf Hamid (22).

There were contrasting reports from both sides on the number of casualties in the latest skirmish on Sunday that left soldiers and civilians dead on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC), the heavily militarized de facto border dividing Kashmir between the two nuclear-armed rivals.
