GM workers to stay on picket line until vote on new contract

GM workers to stay on picket line until vote on new contract”

On Wednesday, the 16th of October 2019, negotiators of General Motors Co. alongside United Auto Workers union had reached a new four-year labour deal after days of tentative talks, suggesting a month-long strike of GM's 48,000 hourly workers that had costed the leading U.S. automaker more than $2 billion and shut down its most profitable factories in Detroit, might have been moving closer to an end.

The national strike officially started at 11:59 p.m., September 15. A record ratification bonus of $11,000 would be paid to permanent employees, while temporary workers would receive a bonus of $4,500.

It will also reopen the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, but leave the Lordstown, Ohio plant closed. There is word that the Detroit-Hamtramck plant will be retooled for a new product.

A majority vote by membership is needed to ratify the contract. The automaker added, "Our goal during these negotiations was to ensure the future of General Motors is one that works for our employees, dealers, suppliers and the communities where we operate".

Meanwhile, UAW leaders representing Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Ford Motor Co. on Friday said their subcommittees will continue to meet until UAW President Gary Jones chooses the next company with which to bargain after GM sets the pattern.

A proposed tentative agreement between the UAW and GM was announced 31 days into the strike. UAW workers will remain on strike until ratification.
