Murderer who triggered Hong Kong protests will go to Taiwan: pastor

Murderer who triggered Hong Kong protests will go to Taiwan: pastor”

Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters are donning cartoon character masks as they form a human chain across the semiautonomous Chinese city, in defiance of a government ban on face coverings.

"While we always respect citizens' rights to assembly and freedom of speech, we are alarmed by this epidemic that radical protesters resort to violence in expressing their opinion", Acting Chief Superintendent of Police Public Relations Branch, Kong Wing-cheung, said in announcing the rejection. More than 2,300 people have been arrested since June.

Civil Human Rights Front convener Figo Chan said he would lead a march on Sunday along the route originally planned and would be joined by other prominent pro-democracy activists including Leung Kwok-hung, Albert Ho and Cyd Ho, RTHK reported.

Cook and Apple came under fire last week after Apple removed an app from its App Store called HKMap.live that let Hong Kong protestors track police.

However, over the past several days we received credible information, from the Hong Kong Cybersecurity and Technology Crime Bureau, as well as from users in Hong Kong, that the app was being used maliciously to target individual officers for violence and to victimize individuals and property where no police are present.

Earlier in the day police rejected an application for a large rally on Sunday, saying they feared hardcore protesters would hijack it and it would turn violent.

Last week, China temporarily suspended ties with the National Basketball Association after Daryl Morey, the general manager of the Houston Rockets, tweeted - and quickly deleted - his support for Hong Kong's pro-democracy protesters, forcing the National Basketball Association to publicly apologise for the move. China denies the accusation, blaming foreign nations such as the USA and Britain for inciting the unrest.

Two people have been shot and wounded by police and thousands injured.

The case of a young Hong Kong man, Chan Tong-kai, accused of murdering his girlfriend in Taiwan a year ago before fleeing back to Hong Kong, was held up originally as an example of why an extradition Bill was needed. Lam formally withdrew the original bill in September.

The case triggered an ill-fated proposal by Hong Kong's pro-Beijing government to ram through a sweeping extradition bill which would have allowed the city to extradite suspects to any territory, including the authoritarian mainland.

Chan is now jailed in Hong Kong for money laundering, and in a surprising announcement on Friday said he would surrender to Taiwanese authorities upon his release, which could be as early as next week.
