Pro-Pyongyang students break into USA envoy's residence in Seoul

Pro-Pyongyang students break into USA envoy's residence in Seoul”

The activists displayed banners reading "Harris leave this land", with two others having attempted to break into the compound.

The group responsible for the incident has been known for anti-American activities in the past, notably a public protest at Gwanghwamun Square in April in which students demanded Washington respect Korea's military sovereignty by withdrawing its forces from the peninsula.

Students shouted, "Stop interfering with our domestic affairs", and chanted "Get out", and "We don't need USA troops", before being removed by police, Reuters reported.

It had asked for security to be stepped up around the residence and the USA embassy, it added.

A spokesman for the US Embassy in Seoul said that the diplomatic mission was "seriously concerned about the illegal breach" and urged Korean authorities to do more to protect the compound.

South Korea's foreign ministry said it had requested increased security for the USA embassy and the ambassador's residence.

The South's foreign ministry condemned the students in a statement, saying that "any harm or attack on foreign diplomatic missions can not be justified under any circumstances".

The student group involved has previously said it would welcome North Korean leader Kim Jong Un if he visited Seoul.

The U.S. and South Korea have a burden-sharing agreement stemming from a 1953 mutual defense treaty after the halt of the Korean War. They were protesting Washington's call for Seoul to sharply increase its financial contribution to the presence of American troops in South Korea.

The U.S. State Department release appeared to echo such a demand, saying that the United States would seek a "fair and equitable outcome to the SMA negotiations for both countries that will strengthen and sustain the resilient" alliance, but that Korea "should contribute more of its fair share" in line with Trump's wishes.

According to a previous analysis by The Washington Post, South Korea's payment to the US a year ago tallied around $830 million, which covered approximately 40% of the cost of the USA deployment; the total cost for the United States is closer to $1.25 billion, not the $5 billion figure Trump stated.

USA military bases have a complex history in South Korea due not only to politics but their association at times with prostitution rings, black markets and other vices.

In August, Trump called for South Korea to pay more for military protection by USA forces.

Final 12 months, tens of hundreds of protesters in Okinawa, Japan marched to cease the deliberate relocation of a U.S. navy base, demanding that the power be faraway from the island completely.

Seoul's top negotiator Jeong Eun-bo will sit down with his US counterpart James Dehart in Hawaii from Tuesday to Thursday for consultations on the Special Measures Agreement.
