Qantas prepares for 20-hour NY to Sydney flight

Qantas prepares for 20-hour NY to Sydney flight”

About 50 passengers and crew members were slated to board on Qantas Airlines flight 7879 at around 9 p.m.at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport.

A willpower will be made on the validity of the flights at the stay of the year.

The objective of the record-breaking flight is to conduct scientific research on passengers and crew on an ultra-long haul flight, with the aim of increasing health and wellness, minimising jetlag and identifying optimum crew rest and work periods.

The Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA), which represents Qantas pilots, said the exploratory flights "will produce a limited set of data that will not adequately replicate real-world flying conditions".

If the key tests prove to be successful, Qantas may launch regular commercial trips from NY and London to Australian cities as soon as 2022.

An historic flight, non-stop from NY to Sydney is underway.

The flight, which is scheduled to depart NY at 9pm from the American megalopolis, is the first of three planned test flights involving the new Boeing 757-9s aircraft which are set to cover new direct routes between Sydney and, London and NY, reports Efe news.

The Qantas airline trip will take 20 hours. At almost 20 hours long, it is set to become the longest non-stop flight in the world.

The flight is expected to last some 19 hours-and-a-half, covering a distance of about 17,000 km.

The research is part of ongoing studies Qantas is conducting with the University of Sydney's Charles Perkins Centre (CPC) to identify scientifically-backed methods to reduce fatigue.

The survey flight, the first time the two cities have been connected by air in one go, is part of Project Sunrise, Qantas' effort to push the limits of commercial flying.

As part of research aimed at reducing jet lag, passengers on board will effectively switch to Sydney time as soon as they leave NY late on Friday.

- Pilots will put on brain-monitoring gear to evaluate their alertness and can present urine samples to trace melatonin ranges (a pure sleep-inducing chemical).

"Time to check in for the first NY to Sydney non stop".

"For crew, it's about using scientific research to determine the best opportunities to promote alertness when they are on duty and maximise rest during their downtime on these flights".

"The passenger research will test alternatives to how airlines have managed in-flight service for decades", Qantas Chief Government Officer Alan Joyce mentioned.

"No airline has done this kind of dedicated research before, and we'll be using the results to help shape the cabin design, in-flight service and crew roster patterns for Project Sunrise".

For the past five years, Qantas has been promising to eradicate one of the worst things about worldwide long-haul air travel to and from Australia: the dreaded stopover. "This is ultimately a business decision and the economics have to stack up". Joyce has said it is not a "foregone conclusion" which company will be chosen. "And if they don't, we won't do it".

Qantas has drawn back the curtains on how best to deal with the curse of global flights, jetlag.
