Trump Resort Will No Longer Host G7 Summit

Trump Resort Will No Longer Host G7 Summit”

Two days after the White House confirmed that next year's Group of Seven summit would be at the Trump National Doral Miami resort, the president tweeted late Saturday that no, actually, it will not.

Trump went on to praise the features of his resort like "tremendous ballrooms" and claimed again that he would not "profit" from the summit.

Trump had been the first administration official to publicly float the selection of his property to host the summit when in August he mentioned it was on the short-list and praised its facilities and proximity to Miami's worldwide airport.

The striking reversal raises further doubts about the position of the president's acting chief of staff, Mick Mulavney, who held a press conference Thursday announcing the choice of Doral for the summit.

Mulvaney this week said the global event from June 10-12, 2020, was much cheaper than other potential venues in California, Colorado, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Florida because Doral would host it "at cost".

"The president has made it clear that he doesn't profit from being here", Mulvaney said during the briefing.

Hosting the G-7 would have been a major boon for the company, filling the hotel in June, a month when the resort is typically less than 40 percent full.

"The question isn't whether President Trump has violated the emoluments clause- or committed other high crimes".

Beyond questions about the ethics of a president awarding a massive summit to himself, there were also security questions: How could anyone seal off a sprawling resort set among neighborhoods and office parks?

The announcement prompted requests from Democrats for detailed records from the White House to explain why other 11 other sites were not chosen and how much taxpayers would pay. Instead, Trump announced a new search would be conducted.

"I understand the folks who participated in it hated it and thought it was a miserable place to have the G-7", Mulvaney told reporters.
