UK PM seeks another Brexit delay in letter to EU

However, it means Johnson must ask the European Union to delay Britain's departure since Parliament previously passed a law compelling him to do that if a Brexit divorce deal were not passed by Saturday.

A spokesperson for Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the EU Commission, said in a tweet that it's up to the United Kingdom government to "inform us about the next steps as soon as possible".

The EU eventually agreed to postpone Brexit until Oct. 31; Johnson has previously the United Kingdom must leave the EU by the end of October - even if there's no deal in place that sets up the parameters of the divorce, like trade and the rights of European citizens living in the UK. "I will tell our friends and colleagues in the EU exactly what I've told everyone in the last 88 days that I've served as prime minister: that further delay would be bad for this country, bad for the European Union and bad for democracy".

EU Council President Donald Tusk tweeted that he had received the extension request.

That leaves Johnson obliged by law to send a letter to Brussels requesting that Britain's departure be delayed until January 31.

Demonstrators erupted into cheers at the news from inside the Commons.

She added: "When this house voted to give the chance of whether to leave the European Union or not to the people did we really mean it?"

Critics have blasted Johnson's move.

Having failed to back a divorce deal, they triggered a law requiring Johnson to write to European Union leaders by the end of the day asking to delay Brexit, to avoid the risk that Britain crashes out in less than a fortnight.

Even if he is given an extension that he does not want by the EU, Johnson could still take the country out of the bloc on October 31 because the law allows him to if he can get all the legislation approved by that date.

Another, referring to the MPs who voted for the amendment, said: "I hope they reject it and just put an end to this misery then all the morons who blocked the deal will be at fault".

If it introduces the treaty implementation bill on Monday, however, MPs could be called to vote as early as Tuesday. It looked set to bring Britain's Brexit saga to a head, more than three years after the country's divisive decision to leave the EU.

"I am incensed that we are not being listened to".

"We feel that we are voiceless. This is a national disaster waiting to happen and it is going to destroy the economy".

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the main opposition Labour Party, backed a second referendum. "Voting for a deal today won't end Brexit".

Mr. Letwin, a veteran Conservative lawmaker, was purged from the party last month for supporting a law meant to prevent Britain from leaving the European Union without any agreement, which many see as risking a disorderly, economically damaging rupture.

Brexit "Super Saturday" topped a frenetic week which saw Johnson confound his opponents by clinching a new Brexit deal with the EU.

A law passed last month compelled the Government to try and postpone Britain's departure if no deal were agreed to by Saturday night (local time). "Further delay will be bad for this country".

Johnson's Conservative Party holds only 288 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons, so he will have to rely on support from other parties and independent lawmakers to get over the line.

Johnson's predecessor Theresa May was forced to delay the departure date. They voted 322-306 to withhold their approval on the Brexit deal until legislation to implement it has been passed.

His hopes of getting the deal through Parliament were dealt a blow when his Northern Ireland ally, the Democratic Unionist Party, said it would not back him.

As the crowd watched events in parliament unfold on large screens and mobile phones they cheered and shouted "people's vote" as they viewed the result as another chance to stop Brexit.
