Video shows coach disarming, embracing Oregon student”

Authorities have released a video that shows part of a former OR football star's successful effort to disarm a student who brought a shotgun to a Portland high school.

Lowe, who played as a wide receiver at OR, said he had just entered a classroom at the Portland high school where he works as a coach and security guard when an armed student appeared in the doorway back in May.

Granados-Diaz initially pleaded not guilty. He went into a classroom with the intent of killing himself, authorities said, not to kill other students.

Later, police are shown arriving at the school and taking Granados-Diaz into custody.

"I walk in there, I get to the classroom, I'm in the classroom for 15, 20 seconds-you know, I ask the teacher, 'Is the student here?'" "I had a real-life conversation. In a fraction of a second, I analyzed everything really fast".

Lowe, a former Oregon Ducks football player and NFL coach, says he lunged for the gun with both hands inside the classroom when he realized what was happening. "He had his two hands on the gun and obviously the kids are running out of the classroom and screaming", Lowe continued.

The student, Angel Granados-Diaz, pleaded guilty to gun charges on October 10.

"I just wanted to let him know that I was there for him".

"For me, there was no time for fear or even to think", Lowe said. The gun was purchased legally, Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) reported.

Lowe, a former University of OR wide receiver, said he felt compassion for the teen who was identified as 18-year-old Angel Granados-Diaz.

If you don't remember this incident, it's because it's a school shooting that didn't happen. "It is also overwhelming that he was there to hurt himself and nobody else".

Classmates and friends said Granados-Diaz, who was a Parkrose High senior, had been sad and lonely after a breakup with his girlfriend. He was sentenced last week to three years of probation.

Earlier this year, a high school coach in OR was celebrated as a hero for stopping an armed student before he could hurt anyone.

According to KOIN 6, the former San Francisco 49ers offensive analyst had previously recounted the May incident during a press conference earlier this year. That changed everything, ' he said, according to "I had no idea, that I would one day have to put my life on the line like I did yesterday for my students". Life is about how I can help other people.
