Zion Williamson will miss start of season with knee injury

Zion Williamson will miss start of season with knee injury”

Shortly after Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN announced that Williamson's injury was not "serious" but would require him to stay clear, Stephen A. Smith said on "First Take" that a source would have told him that Zion had a tense meniscus.

Williamson did not miss any practice during training camp and was spotted walking around the facility on Wednesday.

He averaged 23.3 points per game, shooting 71.4 percent from the field, over four contests.

The Pelicans said Thursday that the No. 1 pick didn't travel with the team to NY, remaining in New Orleans to undergo further testing and evaluation at Ochsner Sports Medicine.

Though the news has undoubtedly unnerved Pelicans fans who have already tabbed Williamson with reinvigorating and bringing glory to their waning franchise, the 19-year-old's delayed debut may be a blessing in disguise for New Orleans.

The Bulls will see Williamson one other time this season on January 8th. He returned in time for the ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament, leading Duke to an ACC tournament title and Elite Eight appearance. He went No. 1 overall to the Pelicans.

As far as who will actually replace the promising rookie in the starting lineup, the Pelicans' options aren't exactly pleasing.

Williamson did not return to game action until March 14 with what Duke was calling a "sprained knee". They'll likely go with Nicolo Melli, a 28-year-old Italian player who has never appeared in an National Basketball Association game in his career.

Over the course of this preseason, we've gotten a great look at what Zion Williamson has to offer, and, as expected, it's elite.
