Toyota to launch ultra-compact EV and new battery strategy”

The production-ready urban runabout will debut alongside three "walking area" assistance models, and a futuristic business EV concept. "With the Ultra-compact BEV, we are proud to offer customers a vehicle that not only allows for greater autonomy, but also requires less space, creates less noise and limits environmental impact". The Ultra-Compact BEV promises to offer an "extremely short turning radius" and top out at 37 miles per hour, which is more than you'll ever need in a crowded city. This tiny, two-seater tyke of a vehicle is aimed at providing environmentally-friendly short-distance transportation.

Toyota sees further possible applications for the auto, such as in municipalities looking to create safe, unrestricted and eco-friendly transportation options in urban and mountainous communities.

The ultra - compact two-seater vehicle is specifically created to meet the daily mobility needs of customers who travel regularly over short distances such as seniors, recently licensed drivers or businessmen visiting local customers.

Alongside the production-ready Ultra Compact BEV, Toyota will showcase the Ultra Compact BEV Concept Model for Business at the Tokyo Motor Show.

It would also be aimed at local authorities as part of mobility solutions and Toyota is already engaging with around 100 corporate and government partners to explore new transportation models that would include BEVs such as the Ultra-compact BEV, and is in ongoing discussions with others.

With the planned sales premiere of the ultra-compact BEV, Toyota also intends to introduce a new business model "that aims to promote the wider adoption of battery electric vehicles in general".

When it hits the showrooms, the Utlra Compact BEV will be primarily marketed to novice drivers, elderly people, business people, and ride-sharing companies.

The Ultra-compact BEV will make its worldwide debut at the Tokyo motor show next week, with test rides available along a 1.5km path.

This endeavour will include the examination of every step in a battery's life, including its manufacture, sale, resale or reuse, and recycling.

All three feature replaceable batteries that take between two and 2.5 hours to recharge, and have a range of 10 to 20km.
