Greta Thunberg Has Tiny New Species of Wingless Beetle Named After Her

Greta Thunberg Has Tiny New Species of Wingless Beetle Named After Her”

Nelloptodes gretae bears little resemblance to its namesake - it is less than 1mm long, and has no wings or eyes.

Scientists wanted to honour the 16-year-old's "outstanding contribution" to raising global awareness of the climate crisis.

The soil sample had been stored in the UK Natural History Museum's collections, and now following analysis using high-powered microscopes the tiny beetle has been identified as a new species. All the nine species belong to a family called Ptiliidae. "She is a great advocate for saving the planet and she is incredible at doing it, so I thought that this was a good opportunity to recognize that".

The museum said the beetle's existence in its vast collection had only just been discovered.

'So it is appropriate to name one of the newest discoveries after someone who has worked so hard to champion the natural world and protect vulnerable species'.

The beetle has been featured in The Entomologist journal's monthly magazine.

Ms Thunberg was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019, which was later awarded to Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

She rose to worldwide prominence after she began school strikes in August 2018 that sparked the global youth-led climate change protest movement Fridays for Future.

Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg issued a rallying cry against Facebook, saying she may quit the social media platform due to its failure to curb the abuse that is frequently leveled against her.

Philip's wife, Joan, presented Thunberg with a scarf, emblazoned with a hummingbird design, which Joan noted was the only bird in the world that can fly backwards - "I felt it fitting that it would be a gift for Greta, as she is both attractive and unique".

India Harris, aged 15, has just watched Greta Thunberg deliver a speech to a crowd of 10,000 people in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery on an uncharacteristically sunny, blustery October day.

What began as a lone fight in August past year outside the Swedish parliament spread all over the world and involved more than 100,000 schoolchildren in 112 different countries.

These solitary strikes sparked a global movement calling for climate action, which now involves millions of people around the world.

Greta has Asperger's and ADHD but has often spoken on how her conditions have acted as a motivator instead of a source of depression, which she said they once were.

Thunberg is touring Western Canada and attended a climate rally in Edmonton last week that attracted thousands of people to the lawn of the Alberta legislature. As it is now, it feels like they are doing the exact opposite, that they are desperately trying to change the subject every time the climate crisis comes up.

"This case is my opportunity to take my activism from the streets into the courtroom so that we as youth can demand that our government stop violating our rights", said Sierra, a 17-year-old plaintiff from Vancouver Island.
