CDC Investigating Fatal Outbreak of Salmonella Infections Linked to Ground Beef”

If you think you have bad beef, or meat of any kind, the CDC says to ALWAYS throw it away or return it to the store for a refund when possible.

Public health and regulatory officials and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service are now investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Dublin infections linked to ground beef, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A salmonella outbreak that's resulted in one death and ten illnesses has impacted at least six USA states.

-Any surfaces or utensils exposed to raw ground beef should be thoroughly cleaned. It's urging consumers to be cautious when preparing ground beef. Lab tests have identified the outbreak strain of Salmonella Dublin in repackaged leftover ground beef collected from an ill person's home in California.

In interviews with the CDC, the people who have gotten sick report eating different types and brands of ground beef purchased from a number of different locations.

Officials advised consumers to handle ground beef carefully and cook it thoroughly to prevent food poisoning. For hamburgers, insert thermometer through the side of the patty until it reaches the middle.

The current outbreak of Salmonella Dublin has been identified in six states: California, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Iowa.

After four to seven days of sickness, most people recover without treatment. The bacteria can also spread through the bloodstream to other parts of the body.

Make sure you're keeping raw meat separate from any foods that won't be cooked before consuming.

-Raw meat handlers should wash their hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water after contact.

The investigation into the outbreak is ongoing and no further details were immediately available.
