Ebola: Attackers kill DR Congo journalist shining light on virus”

The reason for the murder in the city of Lwemba, in the troubled Ituri region, was unknown, but it occurred when health authorities had to introduce a new vaccine against the disease in unaffected areas.

The unnamed journalist, who was also serving as a community health worker, was attacked at his home in the northeast town of Lwemba in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

"This collaboration is essential, and a great demonstration of how the public and private sectors can work together to help tackle a public health crisis".

The victim was also a reporter for a community radio station in Lwemba and was involved in raising the awareness of his community regarding the country's tenth Ebola outbreak, which began over a year ago and is impacting the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu.

A healthcare worker, who volunteered in the Ebola response, sprays the coffin of a 85-year-old woman suspected of dying of Ebola, outside her house in Beni, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Oct. 8, 2019. Jacques Kamwina told AFP news agency that Mahamba had been stabbed to death.

A doctor with the WHo was shot dead in April in an attack on a hospital in North Kivu province.

Violence against health care workers and Ebola treatment facilities has hampered the outbreak of control of the epidemic. Since the start of the epidemic, a nurse and a police officer have been killed in similar circumstances.

With the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded still ongoing in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the nation has opened itself to a second, large-scale vaccine trial backed by a global consortium.

"He was coming home from the radio where he had done a show on the fight against Ebola", he added.

The WHO has warned violence undermines the fight against Ebola, notably impeding safe burials of the highly contagious bodies and the administering of vaccines.

Containment efforts have been hindered by the conflict in eastern Congo, as well as attacks on health workers tackling Ebola in a population where mistrust of outsiders and superstition is rife.

On Saturday, Congolese authorities said they had received 11,000 doses of a second anti-Ebola vaccine from Belgium, the country's former colonial power.

The World Health Organisation had been pushing Kinshasa for months to approve the use of the J&J vaccine - an experimental product- to protect those living outside of direct transmission zones.

The vaccine developed by United States pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson will be administered only to those who want it, the ministry said.
