Netflix will stop supporting older Samsung smart TVs on December 1st”

Samsung announced on Tuesday that some of its older smart TV models will end support for Netflix on December 1, 2019 due to "technical limitations", as first spotted by BGR.

Samsung made this announcement on its official support webpage.

The switch will happen on December 1, with Samsung explaining that it's apparently due to "technical limitations" of some devices.

Samsung says that "as long as you have one of the supported devices, like a game console, streaming media player, or set-top box, you'll still be able to watch Netflix on your TV".

Smart TVs have been around for more than a decade, and in recent years it was near-impossible to buy a TV that wasn't smart.

"We've notified all impacted members with more information about alternative devices we support so they can keep enjoying Netflix uninterrupted", said a Netflix representative to Cnet.

On its support website, Samsung explains that technical limitations are to blame for the loss of Netflix.

In addition to the older Samsung smart televisions no longer being supported, the first two Roku models and some Vizio TVs will also lose support from next month.

Unfortunately, visiting Netflix's listed link to compatible devices doesn't reveal which devices will lose Netflix support at the time of writing, nor does it actually list compatible devices - it only lists compatible brands. Mashable has contacted Samsung and will update this article when we hear back.

So far, we don't know which old Samsung smart TVs are included. Instead, you can purchase an cheap media streaming dongle like a Roku streaming stick, a Google Chromecast, or an Amazon Fire TV stick that can plug into one of your TV's HDMI ports.

In a nutshell: Smart TVs have been around for a while now. The fact that older models aren't good enough to support new software isn't unusual; it happens on all hardware, including smartphones and computers.
