Chlöe Swabrick shuts down New Zealand Parliament member by saying "OK, boomer"

Chlöe Swabrick shuts down New Zealand Parliament member by saying

The generational divide in the room became clear when Chlöe Swarbrick, 25, said "OK Boomer", during her speech on climate change for the Zero Carbon Bill.

"Mr Speaker, for how many World Leaders, for how many decades, have seen and heard what is coming but have decided that it is more politically expedient to keep it behind closed doors".

It's a "simple summarisation of collective exhaustion", she said. I get a rush of pleasure every time I'm scrolling through Twitter and I encounter a quote-tweeted absurd opinion from an old white dude accompanied by a dismissive "OK, boomer".

Apparently the captions on Parliament TV aren't up with the latest slang though, because they registered Chloe Swarbrick's "OK Boomer" comments as "OK, Berma".

Swarbrick, a Green Party MP, was explaining Tuesday how the climate emergency will affect her generation and the generations to come, when she was interrupted by a heckler. "Climate change is a deeply inconvenient truth".

She added that she was exhausted of hearing that millennials ruined everything, and they need to "pull our socks up, or something". "It's better to acknowledge that perhaps energy is better spent elsewhere".

The phrase - which refers to the baby-boomer generation - has gained popularity among young people on social media in recent months as a way of brushing off the views of older generations perceived to be out-of-touch, condescending or closed-minded.

Swarbick later posted on Facebook that her retort had gotten some people upset.

As someone born on the cusp between millennials and generation Z, I love the "OK, boomer" discourse. "That, or we just need to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and abstain from avocados".

Shannon O'Connor, who created a line of merchandise brandishing the phrase, told the New York Times that the phrase is a way for teenagers to counter the "stubborn" mind-set of the older generations.

In internet parlance, "OK boomer" is a derogatory phrase used primarily by the next generations to show their indignation towards older people deemed indifferent to their concerns. It's like, we'll prove you wrong, we're still going to be successful because the world is changing'.
