Golden season for tennis’ golden girl Barty

Golden season for tennis’ golden girl Barty”

Post the win, Barty, who is also a former cricketer, said, "It has been a remarkable year tonight was about coming out and fighting to the end".

With her triumph, Barty becomes the first Australian since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1974 and 1976 to capture the WTA Finals title and only the fifth player to win the tournament in her debut. She then finished off the WTA season Sunday by claiming the elite WTA Finals and a record $4.42 million in Shenzhen, China.

Barty became the 27th player to reach the WTA World No.1 ranking on June 25, 2019, and including her triumphant week at the Shiseido WTA Finals Shenzhen, has amassed 15 weeks in the top spot.

"To come through a week like this, you have to beat the best of the best".

Ever humble in her celebration of her epic victory, Barty first congratulated her opponent. When she did return to the game, she cracked into the top 100 after winning her maiden title in Kuala Lumpur. She soon broke into the top 10.

Instead, the 2019 season belonged to the likes of Naomi Osaka, 22, who started strong, winning the Australian Open in January and rose to No. 1 before losing her mojo and finally rebounding to win two titles in October.

Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic successfully defended their WTA Finals crown, defeating No.2 seeds Hsieh Su-Wei and Barbora Strycova to lift the Martina Navratilova Doubles Trophy once again.

"We've played some exceptional tennis this year", she said last week, defying even logic in her desire to recognize her support team, which includes her coach, Craig Tyzzer, and her mental coach, Ben Crowe.

With little time to celebrate, it's back to Australia for Barty, where she will anchor Team Australia in the Fed Cup finals against France this weekend in Perth. But it was bittersweet for all those who would like to see Williams get the emotional and statistical payoff she has been striving for since she returned to work after becoming a mother.

"I'm in a very unique situation, in a very unique position, that at the moment, at this moment in time, no other person on the planet is in my position", Barty said on the WTA Insider Podcast. "I think it's incredibly scary, but it's exciting". I've worked my whole life to try and get to this point to say what it feels like.

"For me, particularly over the next three or four months, it's going to be really exciting to be home in Australia".
