Pakistan Davis Cup tie shifted to 'neutral' site

Pakistan Davis Cup tie shifted to 'neutral' site”

In a big relief for India's national tennis federation, the world governing body ITF on Monday made a decision to shift country's Davis Cup tie against Pakistan from Islamabad to a neutral venue, hours after Rohit Rajpal was named the captain for the upcoming matches.

Pakistan was earlier scheduled to host India in the Davis Cup Asia Oceania Group-I Tie on September 14-15 at the grass courts of Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad, where matches against Uzbekistan, Korea and Thailand took place in 2017 and 2018.

The AITA is waiting for a final call on the venue by the ITF and then final entry of players will be decided. "We have very inexperienced side which includes Muhammad Mudassar, a first-timer, Abid Mushtaq, have played Davis Cup before and Muzammil, who was part of Pakistan Davis Cup team but he has no experience and exposure of such high-level event".

"We are glad that the decision has finally turned out to be in our favour". At the same time we will also take into account (the rules) of worldwide bodies so that it does not lead to an ugly situation...

While the national governing body chose Rohit Rajpal in Bhupathi's absence, they will soon name a new team for the tie with Bhupathi having made himself available again.

The November 29-30 contest has already been rescheduled once owing to security concerns raised by India. Late on Monday the ITF declared that the tie will be shifted out of Pakistan. "The dates of the tie will be the same and the Indian team will be finalised in a day or two and preparations will start". "Rajpal will go to Pakistan as non-playing captain and this arrangement is only for this tie, as of now", an AITA source said.

"The refusal of Bhupathi to journey to Pakistan has not gone down properly with the AITA".

The AITA had named a six-member squad in August for the tie against Pakistan but a couple of players and captain Mahesh Bhupathi had made themselves unavailable to travel to the neighboring country due to security concerns.

"Prajnesh and Divij had opted out of the tie due to family reasons, and regarding the other three players namely Sumit, Ramkumar, and Rohan, the committee will meet and take the decision". The Davis Cup always brings out incredible displays of patriotism in all players representing their home country, while at Eurosport we continue to power people's passions for tennis by delivering the best events to millions of fans across the continent.
