Police remove more than 1600 migrants from Paris tent camps

Police remove more than 1600 migrants from Paris tent camps”

Police dismantled two makeshift migrant camps in northeast Paris on Thursday, a day after French President Emmanuel Macron's government vowed to clear all tent camps in the capital by the end of the year.

Citing severely degraded health situation and increasing insecurity in the capital's Peripherique ring road, Paris police said they evacuated between 400 and 500 migrants from an illegal roadside site in the Porte de la Chapelle area and almost 900 others on President Wilson avenue.

On Wednesday, French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner pledged to clear out all the migrant camps in northeastern Paris by year-end.

Numerous occupants, which included families with children, said they were from Afghanistan or sub-Saharan Africa. Didier Lallement, one of the Paris police officials, informed that on November 7 approximately 1,606 people were displaced from the migrant camps and after the clearing operation, there are no illegal occupants on the site.

The operation took place hours after the prime minister, Édouard Philippe, report of the new immigration measures from the Government to "regain control of immigration policy" national.

Many have sought to make their way to Paris in recent years, particularly after a once-sprawling migrant camp in Calais was, for the most part, shut down by French authorities in 2016. "The prefects have assured me time and time again that the camps would not go back, but each time have come back", said the mayor of Paris, socialist Anne Hidalgo, who has often criticized the immigration policy of the Government of Macron. According to Versini, about 500 of the 1,300 migrants installed in the Porte de la Chapelle left before the police arrived.

Thursday's operations covered two of the three big informal camps in Paris, Castaner told FranceInfo.

But the migrants evacuated on Thursday will not be forced to stay in the centres or file for asylum, which many fear could lead to their deportation. It is widely assumed that Mr Macron will face off against far-right leader Marine Le Pen, whom he defeated in the presidential run-off in 2017.
