Watch as Ernie Els makes his Presidents Cup captain's picks”

Els and the Internationals players welcomed the prospect of 15-times major champion Woods returning to Royal Melbourne, where he rolled in the winning putt in the 2011 tournament.

Former world No 1 Day joins fellow Australians Adam Scott, Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith in the youngest ever global team, who boast only two players in the world's top 20, with the average age of the 12 players just over 29. The team is looking for its first Presidents Cup win since 1998, which also took place at Royal Melbourne. "That's why I went for these four guys who are very consistent and strong under pressure". The 21-year-old's stellar rookie season was highlighted by 16 top-25 finishes in 35 starts, a trip to the Tour Championship as the only rookie in the field and earning the Arnold Palmer Award as the Rookie of the Year.

"This was very hard for me", Els said, via ESPN. It was very hard to make those calls. Looking at all the stats, I wanted good driving, good ballstriking, obviously, but putting is very important.

"We have got a lot to do but I'm thinking guys who make the team can play", Els said.

Niemann became the first Chilean to win on the PGA Tour in September, claiming a six-shot victory at the season-opening Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia.

"I'm really excited by the new blood that's come in and we have experience too".

Eight players qualified automatically - debutants Li Haotong of China, Taiwan's CT Pan and Mexico's Abraham Ancer, along with Australian newcomer Cameron Smith and his more experienced compatriots Marc Leishman and Adam Scott.

The Internationals have a huge task ahead of them.

The Americans are led by world number one and four-time major victor Brooks Koepka, along with fellow top-10 players Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau plus Webb Simpson (ranked 11) and Matt Kuchar (22).

Els added Jason Day, Joaquin Niemann, Sungjae Im and Adam Hadwin to his 12-man team, which will take on the United States team at Royal Melbourne in Australia starting on December 12 in the biennial event. Scott, at 17th, is the highest-ranked worldwide player. The United States leads the series 10-1-1, with the tie coming in South Africa and Els and Woods tied a playoff match in darkness. In 2017, the USA won easily, almost earning enough points on Saturday to clinch and prevailing 19-11.
