US telecom regulator approves T-Mobile, Sprint merger

US telecom regulator approves T-Mobile, Sprint merger”

The FCC officially announced today that it has approved the $26.5 billion merger of T-Mobile and Sprint.

"The Commission found that the transaction will help close the digital divide and advance United States leadership in 5G, the next generation of wireless connectivity", the FCC said in a statement.

According to Pai it would "help millions in rural America benefit from high-speed 5G mobile broadband service and promote competition".

The FCC, in its order, pushed back against claims that the deal would harm consumers. A couple of the bigs ones are that 5G service will be deployed that covers 97% of Americans within three years and that 90% of Americans will have access to mobile service with speeds of at least 100Mbps within six years. This includes deploying 5G service to cover 85 percent of rural Americans within three years and 90 percent within six years.

The order notes the speed of mobile service will be an important parameter. This includes two-thirds of rural Americans having access to mobile service with speeds of at least 100 Mbps, and 90% of rural Americans having access to speeds of at least 50 Mbps.

Upon completion of its more than year-long review, the Commission determined that approval of the applications of T-Mobile and Sprint—subject to conditions—is in the public interest.

"Compliance with these commitments will be verified by rigorous drive-testing, overseen by an independent third party and subject to Commission oversight, to ensure that the service Americans receive will be what the parties have promised". If they do not, penalties of Dollars 2 billion over six years may accumulate, plus additional payments.

Additional payments will also be sought until they have fulfilled all their commitments.

"New T-Mobile will make the mobile broadband market more competitive in large swaths of rural America where neither New T-Mobile will make more competitive the enterprise wireless market, where neither Sprint nor T-Mobile is now a strong to AT&T and Verizon", he said.

In a dissenting opinion, FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat, said that "American consumers are savvy".

Backers of the deal say combining T-Mobile and Sprint will create a strong number three USA wireless carrier behind Verizon and AT&T, with the resources to invest in 5G, or fifth-generation, networks. Dish will then sign a seven-year MVNO deal with T-Mobile that will allow Dish Network to sell wireless service under its name as it builds out its standalone 5G network. Multiple state attorneys normal filed the accommodate, arguing the offer will reduce competitiveness. The only obstacle that the deal needs to overcome is the merger delay or blockage caused by the state attorneys general.
