Uyinene Mrwetyana's rapist, murderer sentenced to life in prison”

The National Prosecuting Authority in the Western Cape says it's happy at the three life sentences imposed on former Post Office worker, Luyanda Botha, who pleaded guilty to raping and killing UCT student, Uyinene Mrwetyana. Tens of thousands of women went on protest marches up and down the country demanding a stop to gender based violence and an end to the rape and murder of young girls and women.

TimesLIVE is publishing his entire admission, unedited.

Her uncle Vuyani Mrwetyana said they didn't believe this was the first time Botha committed such a crime.

He said: "I opened it and choked the deceased and she fought back and kicked me". The parcel contained clothing she had purchased online. The deceased fought while I sexually violated her. I registered the parcel on the same day.

According to the indictment: "The parcel arrived on August 16, 2019 and on Saturday, August 24, she arrived at the post office after it was closed for business". The post office was due to close at 13h00. The accused was alone inside the post office and let her in.

Botha then left the post office, drank alcohol and returned to cover her body with cushions, a blanket and a jersey.

Addressing the Mrwetyana family, Salie-Hlophe said no sentence could bring back their loved one, but she hoped it provided some closure and would help with their painful and hard path to healing.

Botha made a confession and pointed out the scene after being arrested.

Uyinene Mrwetynana's killer confessed to raping her twice before locking her up in a storeroom before murdering her and attempting to destroy the evidence.

"She fought bravely and courageously". On Friday morning Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe added that Botha would only be eligible for parol after having served 25 years of his sentence.
