British Airways says flights disrupted by ‘technical issue’

British Airways says flights disrupted by ‘technical issue’”

British Airways flights were facing delays in and out of London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports on Thursday after a technical glitch overnight, the airline said.

Some British Airways flights were delayed by a technical issue on Thursday, the airline said, in the latest setback for the British flag-carrier.

Passengers left stranded in the US, Canada and Mexico this week were told by the airline that their "boffins are working on it", with flights into United Kingdom airports including Heathrow and Gatwick worst affected.

The worst affected was Flight BA170 from Pittsburgh, in the U.S., which was more than 12 hours behind schedule.

One passenger complained of a 22-hour delay on Twitter.

British Airways published an information notice on its website saying it rebooked customers affected onto alternative flights and arranged hotel accommodation when needed.

BA said in its previous systems failures that only the London airports were affected, but the disruption had knock-on effects elsewhere, including at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast and in many European destinations when incoming flights failed to arrive.

This is not the first time British Airways has suffered a series of serious operational failures this year. In August, an IT glitch led to the cancellation of over 100 flights and disrupted the travel plans of tens of thousands of passengers.

Rory Boland, editor of Which?

"BA must do the right thing and reroute passengers as quickly as possible, using other airlines where necessary, as well as informing customers facing disruption about their entitlement to compensation".
