Engined Hyundai RM19 Test Bed Could Spawn A Future

Hyundai said the Vision T is meant to "be on the cutting edge of the most dynamic SUV designs". The machine is the seventh in a series of concept cars developed by Hyundai's Design Centre to showcase its "Sensuous Sportiness" design language.

The Hyundai Vision T Plug-in Hybrid previews an "eco-focused" SUV designed for dynamic driving, according to Hyundai. It isn't entirely for show.

The latter may come from Hyundai's partnership with Croatian EV specialist Rimac. The design has been crafted using principles from Hyundai's Sensuous Sportiness design language introduced with last year's Le Fil Rouge Concept. Available options also include Lane Following Assist, which helps keep the vehicle planted in the middle of a road lane. The grille is made up of triangular and trapezoid-shaped panels that are all active shutters, opening for better airflow when the vehicle is in motion. But Hyundai has figured out that it can turn basic functionality into part of the design. So, those are actually what the carmaker calls "parametric air shutters". Hyundai even goes so far as to state that the top speed is limited to 155mph for public highway driving, even though this is a concept - make of that what you will. Considering the shift in the global new vehicle market - and particularly in the US - it recognizes that it has to pursue a similar path with its rapidly expanding SUV line-up.

The current mix, starting with the Santa Fe and Tucson models, are reasonably handsome, but the Vision T design suggests the brand wants to push things a big step beyond.

While the RM19 being displayed in LA is powered by a racing-derived combustion engine, Hyundai says it could be fitted with electrified and full electric powertrains. It's 79.3 inches in width and has a height of 67.1 inches, with a 110.4-inch wheelbase. Blue Link also allows owners of the plug-in or electric model to remotely check the status of their battery so they know when they need to recharge the vehicle. When the vehicle is plugged in, the "Blue Drive" sign right below the port is illuminated and the battery state of charge is visually indicated externally. But it's widely expected we'll see a more direct prototype, possibly even the production model, during the first half of 2020.

One key question is what sort of powertrain options will be offered. The 1.6-liter GDI engine combined with an electric motor in IONIQ Hybrid delivers a total system output of 139 horsepower and up to 195 lb. -ft. of torque.
