Hong Kong protests an attack on ‘one country, two systems’”

US President Donald Trump said on Friday he had saved Hong Kong from being destroyed by persuading Chinese President Xi Jinping to hold off on sending in troops to crush its anti-Beijing movement.

Trump cast his relationship with Xi as the bulwark keeping China from moving against the pro-democracy movement that has rocked Hong Kong during nearly six months of increasingly violent protests.

Others chastised Trump for turning away from the world, or compared the president's disregard for the Hong Kong protesters to his lack of sympathy for the Kurds in Syria.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said earlier Friday his nation wants to work towards a phase one trade agreement with the United States on the "basis of mutual respect and equality", his first comments on a partial deal he could potentially sign with Mr Trump.

President Donald Trump said he's personally saved Hong Kong from being "obliterated", sparing thousands of lives, though he declined to say whether he'll support a USA bill backing the protesters.

"For a guy who promised to be tough on China, President Trump's reliable deference to President Xi is all the more bewildering", Schumer said. "I'd like to see them work it out, okay?"

"If it weren't for me, Hong Kong would have been obliterated in 14 minutes", Trump said in a scattershot early morning interview with Fox News.

"I stand with Hong Kong, and I stand with freedom", he continued. That came one day after the Senate had approved the measure on a unanimous vote. And if we could do that, that would be great.

The bills call for a yearly assessment of the status of Hong Kong's special autonomy, with sanctions imposed as penalties upon anyone (in China) deemed to be violating them, and seeks to prevent the USA from exporting crowd-control weapons to Hong Kong police. But talks have deadlocked over the details of Chinese purchases of USA farm products and plans for the removal of Trump's tariffs on $360 billion in Chinese goods.

Patten called on the British government to speak out as soon as possible to express its concern at the Chinese remarks, which followed the overturning by Hong Kong courts of a ban on protesters wearing face masks, a move that infuriated Beijing. "But thousands of people", Trump said Friday. President Trump has sought to ink a far-reaching trade deal with China to stabilize the situation, however the signing process might not begin until next year.
