Marie Kondo's newly-launched online homeware store sparks controversy

Marie Kondo's newly-launched online homeware store sparks controversy”

Marie Kondo, the lady who insisted we get rid of most of our stuff, now has an online shop where we can buy more STUFF!'

Rather than a means of promoting consumerism, Kondo added, she was inspired to open the store in response to the many people who have asked her about the items she uses on a daily basis.

"My tidying method isn't about getting rid of things - it's about heightening your sensitivity to what brings you joy", Kondo wrote on her website.

Kondo may not associate her brand with materialism, but as other lifestyle gurus have done before her - Gwyneth Paltrow, for one - she is capitalizing on an aspiration to live a certain kind of life.

The criticism continued, with another fan writing: "Marie Kondo has started a shop, where once you've cleared out all your existing overpriced, trendy junk, you can replace it with new overpriced, trendy junk ... you have to respect the scam!"

"All these years, Marie Kondo wanted us to throw stuff away".

"The new "meaningful items" in the @MarieKondo shop that she made us make room for", Twitter user @Ad_zurdo wrote, along with photos of the stick and tuning fork.

An avid organizer from a young age, Kondo developed her signature KonMari Method to encourage introspection and personal growth through decluttering.

Described as "a collection of items that spark joy for Marie and enhance your everyday routine", it features things such as a US$275 (NZ$428) brass tool holder, a US$96 (NZ$149) gold ladle and a US$75 (NZ$170) desktop box.

If you are unfamiliar with her beyond having maybe heard a friend refer to decluttering their apartment as "Marie Kondo-ing my space", Marie Kondo is an "organizing consultant" with her own Netflix show and the author of the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. People can now purchase elegant home furnishings that have passed her "joy check", her signature test to detect if something "sparks joy" and should therefore remain in one's possession. Marie Kondo could, hypothetically, appear in a commercial for bespoke matcha whisks, and the bespoke matcha whisk company would cut her a check. "I've got a feeling it's going to spark a lot of joy for me".

"What is most important for me is that you surround yourself with items that spark of joy", he said. Another said, "So now Marie Kondo wants you to buy as much of her stuff as possible?"
