Salad products in OH recalled for possible E. coli

Salad products in OH recalled for possible E. coli”

More than 48 tons of premade salads sold at national chains around the country have been recalled over fears of E. coli contamination.

The Maryland Department of Health identified E. coli in an unopened package of Ready Pac Foods Bistro Chicken Caesar Salad that was collected from a sick person's home in Maryland. The state collected and tested individual ingredients in the salad and the lettuce tested positive for E. coli O157:H7.

All products from the same lot of lettuce are included in the Missa Bay recall.

Missa Bay sold them to food distributors in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Connecticut, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. The products were produced between October 14 and October 16, the agency noted.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Nov. 21, 2019 - USDA updated to reduce the poundage recalled from 97,272 to 75,233 due to the exclusion of non FSIS-regulated product. A full list of products affected can be found here. "18502B" inside the USDA mark of inspection and were produced between October 14 and October 16, 2019.

This includes California, where two people recently fell ill, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"This could be just the beginning of a larger outbreak related to romaine lettuce, and could result in more recalls", says Michael Hansen, Ph.D., senior scientist at Consumer Reports.

Most people recover within a week, according to the FSIS, but some develop a more severe infection. Infection is usually diagnosed by testing of a stool sample. Vigorous rehydration and other supportive care is the usual treatment; antibiotic treatment is generally not recommended. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure, is uncommon with STEC 0157:H7 infection.

The FDA issued a statement that urged consumers not to eat berries purchased between Sept 9-Sept 30 even if they froze them as freezing does not kill the virus.

Anyone with this recalled salad should throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
