Will Ferrell Reveals How The ‘SNL’ Cowbell Sketch ‘Ruined’ Christopher Walken’s Life

Will Ferrell Reveals How The ‘SNL’ Cowbell Sketch ‘Ruined’ Christopher Walken’s Life”

"I think he was really mad at me", Ferrell said, then admitting that Walken "had a little smile" while he explained it. He said he visited Walken backstage at a theater performance many years after the sketch aired and the actor told him, "You know, you've ruined my life".

On Thursday, Will Ferrell appeared on "The Tonight Show", reminiscing with host Jimmy Fallon about their time on Global's "Saturday Night Live".

Ferrell is hosting "Saturday Night Live" this Saturday, Nov. 23, at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT on Global.

Blue Oyster Cult producer Bruce Dickinson instructs fictional band member Gene Frenkle, who was played by Ferrell, to use "more cowbell" during the popular 1976 song Don't Fear the Reaper. "I've got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell!"

Ferrell and Fallon, 45, joked about laughing while in character, but Ferrell said that Walken hasn't been laughing about the aftermath of the hilarious sketch.

Some of Ferrell's most memorable sketches throughout the span of his entire SNL career include Celebrity Jeopardy as host Alex Trebeck, his take on former President George W. Bush, sportscaster Harry Caray, or his infamous Spartan cheerleader, alongside Cheri Oteri.

"Here's the insane thing", Ferrell said. "The other day I went for an Italian food lunch and the waiter asked if I wanted more cowbell with my pasta bolognese, '" Ferrell said Walken told him backstage. Instead, he might even get a small sense of pride knowing his two scripted words, "more cowbell", inspired an entire generation. In the sketch, Dickinson insisted that the band's famous track "needs more cowbell", and Ferrell's character went wild with the suggestion.

Walken told Ferrell: 'People during the curtain call bring cowbells and ring them'. Here's hoping Christopher Walken shows up in the audience with a cowbell. They also, apparently, "ruined" the life of actor Christopher Walken.
