Britain ignores United Nations deadline to cede control of Chagos Islands

Britain ignores United Nations deadline to cede control of Chagos Islands”

The UK Government's "defiant criticism of the ICJ and its blatant disregard for the Advisory Opinion of the Court and UNGA Resolution 73/295, undermine its long-standing commitment to a rules-based worldwide system", said the prime minister.

The country has said it was forced to give up the archipelago in exchange for independence, which it won in 1968.

Olivier Bancoult, from The Chagos Refugee Group, led a peaceful protest of few dozen islanders outside the British High Commission on Mauritius, where numerous displaced Chagossians live after being barred from their homelands.

Britain does not recognize the sovereignty claims made by Mauritius.

The Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth however accusd Britain of violating International Law by continuing to hold on to the Islands.

Britain forcibly evicted of us from the islands, a sovereignty within the Indian Ocean disputed by the United Kingdom and Mauritius, within the 1960s and 1970s so the U.S. would possibly maybe well maybe originate a military immoral.

In May, the UN General Assembly voted by an overwhelming majority (116-to-6) for a resolution demanding that the islands be handed over to Mauritius.

The UN resolution came only three months after the UN's high court advised the United Kingdom should leave the islands "as rapidly as possible".

A United Nations deadline for Britain to leave ended Friday.

Sanctions would be slow, incremental and largely institutional - in the sense that Britain is going to find itself squeezed at institutions that it has traditionally seen as very important.

Mauritius and its dependencies were officially proclaimed a colony of Britain in 1814 under the Treaty of Paris.

The deadline is not binding, so no sanctions or immediate punishment will follow - but that could change.

Speaking in a United Nations court past year, former Mauritian president Anerood Jugnauth said his country was coerced into a 1968 independence agreement with Britain that allowed hundreds of Chagos islanders to be relocated against their will.

Britain then invited the USA to build a military base on Diego Garcia.

The Chagos Islanders' Movement, which has campaigned on behalf of more than 1,500 people, claims the islanders were "forced out and dumped in the slums of Mauritius and the Seychelles". In 2016, the lease for the base was extended until 2036.

In 2002, the British Overseas Territories (BOTs) Act granted British citizenship to resettled Chagossians born between 1969 and 1982.
