Russia bans sale of gadgets without Russian-made software

Russia bans sale of gadgets without Russian-made software”

The law will not mean devices from other countries can not be sold with their normal software - but Russian "alternatives" will also have to be installed. It has been revealed that Russia will ban sales of gadgets, smartphones, TVs and more that do not have Russian software installed. The law goes into effect in July 2020.

The Russian government will draw up a list of those electronic devices that needs to have Russian-made software pre-installed. The Association of Trading Companies and Manufacturers of Electrical Household and Computer Equipment (RATEK) has also mentioned that it is not possible for many global companies to install Russian-made software and for this reason, they might exit the market.

"The bill provides Russian companies with legal mechanisms to promote their programs and services in the field of information technology for Russian users", the State Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia, said. Apple, meanwhile, has been hit with antitrust allegations.

But there are concerns about the supervision and concerns that the company could pull out of the Russian market.

Russia's lower house of parliament passed the legislation, which was co-authored by Oleg Nikolayev, on Thursday. "And if, alongside pre-installed applications, we will also offer the Russian ones to users, then they will have a right to choose", said Nikolayev.

Online privacy advocates say that the new law is meant to increase surveillance and censorship by the government, while the bill's proponents argue that they are trying to promote Russian industries over foreign competition.

"Naturally, when a person sees them. they might think that there are no domestic alternatives available". The country has been introducing rigorous internet laws for the last five years. We would like to show you the Russian applications as well as the already installed applications.

In May Putin signed a signed a controversial bill that routes Russian web traffic through points controlled by Russian government. Those gadgets can at present be sold with their ordinary software, however, Russian options must be introduced, too.

Russian Federation has been stressing that it plans to improve cyber security but critics have a different opinion.
