Frozen 2 rakes in $127m at its US box office debut

With its debut, Frozen II adds onto Disney's billion-dollaryear, bringthe tally to past $3billion at the domestic box office. Both Doctor Sleep (Warner Bros.) and Charlie's Angels (Sony Pictures) fell well below expectations, creating somewhat of a slump for movies set within the realms of fantasy, science fiction, and horror.

Frozen 2 raked in $127 million (£98.9 million) in its opening weekend in the USA, beating forecasts and the box office debut of the original Frozen. Reportedly, the sequel to the original 2013 film earned around $127 million at the box office in Canada and in the United States.

"Frozen 2" broke the record for the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated film with $350 million.

On Friday, the movie kicked off with $41.9 million on Friday and experienced a jump of 19% with a total $49.8 million.

Around the world, Frozen II was number one in almost every part of the globe and even broke records.

Frozen 2 raised $127 million domestically this past weekend, according to estimates from Comscore, and some $223 million overseas. In China, the movie was the third-highest opening for a cartoon film. But even with that long-awaited revenue boost for movie theaters, the industry is still behind the record pace set a year ago.

Some of the other top-earners this past weekend include Matt Damon and Christian Bale's critically acclaimed movie, Ford Versus Ferrari.

Elsewhere, Sony's "Charlie's Angels" stumbled in its second weekend, suffering a painful 62% decline to $3.1 million for a domestic total of $13.9 million.

Lionsgate's Knives Out earned just $2 million at early showings, however, the film will screen on more theaters on Wednesday. Not accounting for inflation, Frozen II is now the third-biggest launch for an animated film in North America.
