Google explains why so many Stadia games aren’t hitting the promised 4K60

Google explains why so many Stadia games aren’t hitting the promised 4K60”

Google has finally responded to complaints that Stadia isn't hitting its promised 4K/60 fps quality levels. "And because Stadia lives in our data centers, developers are able to innovate quickly while delivering even better experiences directly to you without the need for game patches or downloads".

"We give developers the freedom of how to achieve the best image quality and frame rate on Stadia", the company said.

What some Stadia early adopters are now complaining about is a bit different: The fact that some Stadia games aren't running in native 4K (even though the video stream is in 4K) is quite surprising, especially since Google claimed that Stadia was the first next-gen platform, with more computing power than the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro combined. Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Destiny were found to play at FullHD/FullHD+ and 30fps, a far cry from what was initially promised. In the case of Destiny 2, the game is 1080p on Google's servers, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is 1440p.

Fortunately, that wait is now over and Founders can send the buddy pass to their gaming buddy so they can enjoy the perks of install-free 4K (depending on certain factors) game streaming for free for three months.

As noted last week by 9to5Google, the quality of games on Stadia leaves much to be desired as the service doesn't support true 4K resolution for all launch titles as previously committed by Google. "We designed Stadia to enable 4K/60 (with appropriate TV and bandwidth)". Worse still, numerous games simply aren't running at the true 4K resolution that was promised as a standard feature following Stadia's initial reveal event. The wording of this refund policy adjustment also implies this change may only be available for this initial launch period - it's unlikely Google will continue to offer this going forward.
