1 dead, thousands flee Philippines typhoon as flights axed”

Operations at the Philippine capital's global airport are to be temporarily suspended starting Tuesday, an official said, as a safety precaution against the powerful typhoon.

At least one person has died and tens of thousands have been evacuated as Typhoon Kammuri hits the Philippines' main Luzon island.

CAAP said airports in Bicol, Eastern Visayas, central and southern Mindanao regions, have already prepared by boarding up facilities, reinforcing structures, charging generators, and restocking batteries and needed emergency supplies.

The Philippines evacuated 200,000 people in coastal and mountainous areas due to fears of flooding and landslides and said it would also shut its main worldwide airport as a powerful typhoon was set to make landfall on Monday night.

More than 50 areas are on storm signal 3, the third-highest in a five-level warning system, as it made landfall in Sorsogon province late Monday. The typhoon will also be on track to pass close to the capital Manila, where many ongoing SEA Games events are hosted.

The Philippines is hosting the 30th Southeast Asian Games that will run through Dec 11.

Windsurfing, originally scheduled for Sunday, has been reset as have other outdoor events, ABS-CBN News reported. Organisers are due to deliver an update on the impact later on Monday.

Ramon Suzara, the chief operating officer of the organising committee, said contingency plans were in place for bad weather, but the duration of the Games would not be extended.

The storm is the latest trouble for the Games, which saw a series of transport snafus and a rush of last-minute construction ahead of the opening. Organisers hope more than 500 million viewers will tune in on TV.

In an eclectic programme, Olympic sports like swimming and athletics sit side-by-side with regional favourites such as martial arts, and this year athletes will even battle an obstacle race course in Manila.
