Israel planning new Jewish settlement in flashpoint Hebron

Israel planning new Jewish settlement in flashpoint Hebron”

The Israeli army said its forces spotted three people hurling firebombs at Israeli vehicles on a nearby route and fired at them.

In contrast to AFP's and Reuters' headlines, Associated Press' headline accurately states: "Israeli army kills alleged Palestinian teen attacker".

Hebron, the largest city in the West Bank, was divided into two areas and forms of control in 1997: H1 and H2. Some 33,000 Palestinians reside in H2, along with several hundred Jewish settlers living under Israeli civil law.

Palestine has repeatedly threatened to resort to the United Nations, the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice against Israeli violations in three main areas, namely the Israeli settlement activity, the Israeli military offensive on Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Last month, Pompeo announced that the USA government will no longer consider Israel's West Bank settlements "inconsistent" with worldwide law.

Harking back to the period of stabbing and other Palestinian attacks four years ago when mainstream media outlets routinely published headlines falsely casting Palestinian perpetrators as victims, two leading wire services this weekend once again offered up headlines turning a reported Palestinian assailant into the victim.

Sunday's statement said the planned new building project would "double the number of Jewish residents in the city".

According to several resolutions of the UN Security Council, the most recent in 2016, Israeli settlements are illegal under global law, as they violate the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits an occupying power from transferring its population to the area it occupies.

The move comes amid political turmoil in Israel after general elections in April and September ended in deadlock. "We'll stay in it forever", he said.

He cited a recent U.S. decision that it is abandoning its decades-old position that Israeli settlements on Palestinian territories are "inconsistent with global law" as a case in point, in addition to Washington's recognition of the holy city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Since then, more than 120 Israeli civilian settlements were built in the disputed area.
