Riot Games to Pay Out $10 Million in Gender Discrimination Lawsuit

Riot Games to Pay Out $10 Million in Gender Discrimination Lawsuit”

The company has around 2,500 employees around the world and almost 1,000 employees who self-identify as female who have worked at Riot Games in the past five years will be entitled to a payment from the agreed settlement, with the final dollar amount depending on how long the employee has serviced the company.

The Los Angeles Times reported today that the settlement will cost Riot at least $10 million, which will be divided between approximately 1,000 women employed by the studio between November 2014 and the finalization of the settlement, which still needs to be settled by the court.

The laswsuit began in November of previous year, with two female employees who had worked at the company's Santa Monica offices suing over violations of the California Equal Pay act.

The settlement filing also lays out a number of commitments Riot has made to improve its company culture, including beefing up internal programs for reporting sexual harassment and discrimination.

When it announced the settlement in August, Riot said it believed it had a "strong position to litigate", but that "it was the strongest statement we could make... that we're prepared to go over and above in order to move forward". Just how much each current or former employee receives will be determined in part by how long they worked at Riot Games and whether they were full-time or worked under a contract. At the time, Riot said it could not share the details of the settlement until it had been reviewed and approved by the court.

The League of Legends' developer's "men-first" and "bro" company culture was first brought to light by a Kotaku investigation, which described a sexist environment where women are routinely discriminated against.

In May, hundreds of employees walked out of the company in protest how they were handling sexual harassment lawsuits and claims.
