Two children killed, 1 missing in Arizona as winter storm grips US

Two children killed, 1 missing in Arizona as winter storm grips US”

Two children were found dead and one remains missing Saturday morning after they were trapped in a truck in Arizona's Tonto Creek.

The sheriff's office said the two children found dead were each about 5 years old, one boy and one girl.

Rescue staff in helicopters efficiently reached 4 different kids and an grownup who have been stranded on an island within the creek and a second grownup who was on the shore.

Dodd said two adults and two children were rescued Friday.

Adverse conditions included thick weeds and slippery mud along the stream and ice water from the thaw, but authorities said they were hopeful.

The Rawlings family members are from various areas of Arizona and were in the area visiting relatives for the Thanksgiving holiday, according to Lt. Virgil Dodd of the Gila County Sheriff's Office.

"Hopefully, we will find her soon and bring her back to safety", Dodd said of the missing child. That's near the town of Tonto Basin.

The sheriff's office said there were barricades on either side of the creek and signs that said "Do not cross when flooded" when the incident happened. "We have no information as to why they were trying to cross the creek", the spokesman said.

Crews in helicopters were searching for the missing children Friday night, CNN reported. "There was nobody in the truck".

Sheriff's Deputy Phil Smith told azfamily.com that the Sheriff's Office closed the creek crossing and others in the area several hours before the vehicle tried to cross.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix had warned Friday of flooding in Gila County, urging people to stay alert "even in locations not receiving rain". The meteorologist Sean Benedict in Phoenix estimated that up to 2 inches of rain fell in the area, and some of the runoff came from the snow that fell on nearby peaks.
