Andrew Scheer announces resignation as Conservative Party leader | FULL SPEECH”

EDMONTON-Although Andrew Scheer stepping down from the Conservative Party on Thursday swiftly reignited speculation about Alberta Premier Jason Kenney stepping up, Kenney just as quickly shot that speculation down - but the search for a new leader could still shake up Alberta's place on the federal stage.

Scheer was emotional in his seven-minute speech to the House of Commons, calling it one of the most hard decisions he has ever made.

Mr Scheer has faced intense pressure from within his party to resign since losing October's federal election to Justin Trudeau's Liberals. We're here to hold the Liberal government to account.

"He indicated in his speech to caucus that he wants a united party, he thought he was doing what's best for the party and he was doing what he thought was best for his family". "We increased seats all over this country".

"He is putting the party first, the interests of Canadians first and the interests of his family first". The decision comes after a disappointing election loss.

"He believed this was the best path forward", McLeod said, noting she will not be in the mix of people seeking the party leadership.

Doherty declined to say what kinds of qualities he will be looking for in a new leader. "This includes a differential in schooling costs between Regina and Ottawa", he said. "All proper procedures were followed and signed off on by the appropriate people", said Dustin van Vugt, the executive director of the Conservative Party of Canada. Jean-Guy Dagenais, who was appointed as a Conservative but now sits with one of the independent groups in the Senate.

Since then, Scheer has resisted calls from within his own party to step down. This is not a decision that I came to lightly.

Andrew Scheer, his wife Jill, and their children arrive to a voting station on election day.

Even as Scheer was going out the door, anonymous Conservatives couldn't resist one last plunge of the dagger.

The home region of the new leader may matter, she said. He'd only won the first by a hair over Maxime Bernier, and whether he had enough support among the party's rank and file to do it again was unclear. We need to pick a leader who can win in the next election.

"During this leadership election there will be no free rides in the House of Commons", he said.

Trudeau responded by saying he and Scheer, as well as the other parents in the House, share the goal of wanting to improve things for their children. Trudeau hugged him and shook his hand.

The objective of the Toronto meetings was to see about hiring a firm to do the outreach and polling for that, said a Conservative source not authorized to publicly discuss an internal party matter.

"As our party embarks on this exciting opportunity, electing a new leader and Canada's next prime minister, I intend to stay on as leader of the party and the Official Opposition".

Scheer alienated and disappointed his social conservative base during his campaign by insisting a Conservative government would not reopen the abortion issue, stating that he would ensure pro-life, pro-family private member bills did not make it to the House of Commons, and stating that he would continue the Justin Trudeau Liberals government's funding of abortion overseas, which is projected to amount to $1.41 billion by 2023. "And so I don't think we should shy away from that process", he said. "I respect that deeply of him and to thank him for that focus on a better future for his kids".

Andrew Scheer is stepping down as Conservative leader.

Scheer had said that he would stay on and fight the leadership review, slated for April in Toronto, but his heart never seemed in the fight.

"He's worked incredibly hard", McLeod said.

Who knows? Maybe the next Conservative leader will march in gay pride parades, favour a national carbon tax and banning handguns.

"The theme is the same regardless of whether you are an economic conservative, a social conservative or a libertarian, and this is it: that he wasn't strong enough", Former Conservative MP Raitt told an audience at a University of Toronto event on November 27, referencing her conversations with party members.
