Facelifted Honda Civic Type R revealed with handling and interior upgrades

Facelifted Honda Civic Type R revealed with handling and interior upgrades”

Following in the footsteps of the facelifted Civic range, the Type R has been given a subtle facelift for 2020, but don't beat yourself up if you can't spot the differences. On the outside, there's a new Type R-exclusive paint job called Boost Blue.

After giving the new Civic and Civic Si a mild facelift previous year, it wasn't long for the Honda Type R to receive the same treatment.

On the chassis front, the Type R has a multilink back axle and a clever dual-axis arrangement with a variable ratio steering rack at the front, which all help to make it one of the best handling front-wheel drive hatchbacks that we've ever driven. So despite having access to a performance twin-clutch, the Type R is a non-auto hot hatch.

The mid-cycle facelift comes along with quite a few mechanical changes as Honda has installed newly developed two-piece brake rotors coupled to updated brake pads created to reduce fade and boost the stopping power at high speeds. Mechanically speaking, output remains the same at 320hp/295lb ft of torque, although Honda has had another go at the car's already impressive chassis, updating the dampers for improved ride comfort and installing stiffer rear bushes in the pursuit of additional grip.

Apparently, the 2020 model year marks the first time Honda Sensing is standard across the entire Civic lineup.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine continues without change. Honda's new "Sensing" driver assistance package is now equipped as standard, bringing aids like lane-keeping assistance, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. The engine will also be mated to a six-speed manual transmission. As before, drivers will get to pick between three selectable modes (Comfort, Sport, +R) that change throttle and steering response as well as the firmness of the suspension.
