Aussies lead at Hong Kong Open

Aussies lead at Hong Kong Open”

Singapore's SEA Games golf champion James Leow shot a two-over 72 at the Hong Kong Open on Saturday (Jan 11) for a 212 total.

Lowry made birdies at the second, fourth, ninth, 16th and 17th and dropped just one shot by three-putting from long range at the seventh.

Wade Ormsby carded four-under-par 66 for the third day in a row to complete a wire-to-wire win.

U.S. big-hitter Tony Finau was also six off, shooting a tournament-best 65 but squandering a chance to close the gap on Ormsby after three birdie putts came up just short.

Lowry looked in the mood from the start, chipping in superbly from the bunker to birdie the first, with Finau making a smart putt to do the same. He finished at 17-under 263 to notch a four-stroke triumph over reigning British Open champion Shane Lowry, who closed with 64 to record his best result since hoisting the Claret Jug in July. "If he has a really good weekend, he might run away, but hopefully I can shoot two decent scores and give myself a chance".

"Obviously a little salty taste, but that won't last".

Thailand's Gunn Charoenkul, who started the final round in second place, shot a 69 to finish in sole possession of third place at 12-under 268.

Amateur 17-year-old Alexander Yang led the Hong Kong contingent, finishing seven under par before he will fly back to the United States, where he is based, to start the school week.

The Hong Kong Open was initially scheduled to take place at the start of December but it had to be delayed due to the social unrest affecting the city.

The Hong Kong Open was supposed to be the kickoff event of the 2019-20 European Tour season but was postponed after violence from anti-government protests escalated.
