European powers trigger Iran nuclear deal dispute process

European powers trigger Iran nuclear deal dispute process”

The three powers will inform the European Union on Tuesday they plan to trigger the mechanism, the sources said.

The nuclear deal saw Iran, which insists its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful, agree to limit its sensitive activities and allow in inspectors in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions.

Donald Trump has been pressing Europe to leave the nuclear deal ever since he unilaterally took the United States out of deal in May 2018, and the White House will be delighted that its sustained pressure has paid off.

"We have therefore been left with no choice, given Iran's actions, but to register today our concerns that Iran is not meeting its commitments under the JCPoA (Iran deal) and to refer this matter to the Joint Commission under the Dispute Resolution Mechanism, as set out in paragraph 36 of the JCPoA", the three European states said in the statement.

The process can ultimately lead to a "snapback" - the reimposition of sanctions in place under previous United Nations resolutions.

Officials described the move as one taken more in sorrow than anger and said it was in part prompted by fears that Iran may now be less than a year away from possessing the capacity to develop a nuclear bomb.

"Our intention is not to restore sanctions, but to resolve our differences through the very mechanism that was created in the deal", a second diplomat said.

They are keen for it not to escalate to the stage where global sanctions are reintroduced.

Iran rolled back its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) following the death of its most influential military leader, Qassem Soleimani, in an American drone strike. After days of denials, the Iranian authorities acknowledged responsibility for the crash, and have since faced days of anti-government demonstrations at home. -Iranian tensions, Britain on Tuesday urged a new nuclear deal with Iran. Tehran says it will not renegotiate as long as U.S. sanctions are in place.

He said: "If we're going to get rid of it, let's replace it and let's replace it with the Trump deal..." President Trump is a great dealmaker, by his own account. "Let's work together to replace the JCPOA and get the Trump deal instead", Johnson told the BBC.
