Russians hacked company key to Ukraine scandal

Russians hacked company key to Ukraine scandal”

A USA cybersecurity company says Russian military agents successfully hacked the Ukrainian gas company at the center of the scandal that led to President Trump's impeachment.

According to Area 1, cited by the NYT, the hackers outwitted Burisma employees into handing over login credentials thus enabling access to one of the petrochemical company's servers. Area 1 says it has been tracking the Russian agents for several years. It was not clear from the report what information if any was obtained. Breaching Burisma could yield communications from, to, or about Hunter Biden, who served as a director between 2014 and 2019. Hunter Biden stopped working with the company in 2019.

Trump denies he did anything wrong by asking Ukrainian officials to investigate Hunter Biden's relationship with Burisma.

An anonymous whistleblower filed a complaint that Trump pressured Zelensky to investigate the Bidens, with the president vowing to withhold USA military aid to Ukraine until Kiev complied with his demand - a claim that had triggered the impeachment, with dozens of witnesses against the United States president.

Area 1 said it became aware of the hack after its email security scanning product found suspicious evidence online, including "decoy domains" for the fake websites.

"Cyber campaigns continue to be a geopolitical tool for waging war, influencing elections, theft of intellectual property and financial assets, and espionage", but phishing campaigns depend on the human perception of authenticity and can be stopped, Falkowitz said in a statement.

USA media claimed Monday, citing American cybersecurity "pundits", that "Russian hackers" attempted to infiltrate Burisma, a Ukraine-based fossil-fuel company.

"It would not at all surprise me".

According to The Times, it is not known what the hackers were looking for or whether they found it.

Burisma did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Based on this vague assumption, Area 1 concluded that the supposed Russian hackers were behind the cyberattack on Burisma.

In July, the U.S. Federal Elections Commission gave Area 1 permission to offer its services to candidates for federal elected office and political committees at the same low rates it charges non-profits.

The security firm Area 1, which first detected the hacking on New Year's Eve, told the Times that Russian efforts began in early November, when the impeachment was all over the news.

The report was released with Trump expected to stand trial in the Senate as early as this week on two articles of impeachment - abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The whistleblower complaint was unsealed in September. There, unwitting victims enter their usernames and passwords, which the hackers then harvest. That can allow groups to get inside systems and impersonate employees. Trump is seeking reelection and Biden is a potential opponent out of a dozen Democrats seeking their party's nomination. "Now we know that Vladimir Putin also sees Joe Biden as a threat".
