Serena Williams Donates Tournament Prize Money To Australian Bushfire Relief

Serena Williams Donates Tournament Prize Money To Australian Bushfire Relief”

After taking the title at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand on Sunday, Serena Williams announced that she would be donating all of the prize money, a total of $43,000 United States dollars, to relief efforts for the massive bushfires now ravaging Australia, according to the Associated Press.

Serena: If I am, I want you to personally take me off and escort me off the court.

In addition to her charitable announcement, Williams' win on Sunday also has further cause for celebration: It marked her first title since giving birth to her daughter in 2017, who was at Sunday's match. "It's just a step toward the next goal".

Serena also made an incredible gesture by announcing that she would donate her $43,000 Auckland prize money to Australian bushfire relief. Pegula had those five break chances in the first couple of return games, breaking Serena in the first game after a backhand error from the top seed and creating more opportunities two games later. Barty is looking to become the first Australian to win the Grand Slam since Christine O'Neil in 1976.

Little about the excellent performance of Osaka is remembered as the contest was overshadowed by Williams' furious exchange with umpire Carlos Ramos that saw her receive three code violations, resulting in a game penalty. It reached 8th place in 2019. Her last placement was May 8, 2017.

Pegula has been on a steady climb up the rankings since overcoming a serious knee injury two years ago.

"I've been playing Australia for over 20 years, and it's been really hard for me to watch all the news and everything that's been happening in Australia with all the fires", said Williams.

"I have been playing for so long and been through so much and I'm happy to be doing something I love".

"It was good, because it's good for me to win matches where I'm not getting too many free points and I have to rely on my groundstrokes".

Just over a week out from the Australian Open, Williams looks in blistering form as she eyes a record-tying slam.
