Two Second World War bombs defused in Germany after mass evacuation”

German disposal experts successfully defused two World War II bombs discovered in the western German city of Dortmund on Sunday.

Defusing unexploded ordnance is a frequent exercise still across Germany, because an estimated 10% penetrated the ground and failed to detonate.

The city centre, main train station and National Football Museum were sealed off by a protective wall in order to carry out the excavation work. The incident took place after officials shut down the city's main train station and ordered thousands of people to leave their homes before they began the bomb removal operation, Deutsche Welle reported.

In an online statement, Dortmund city hall said they had identified four locations where they suspect unexploded bombs dropped by Allied forces during the war. People were able to learn if they were affected from a list of addresses published by the authorities.

The bombs had been discovered weeks earlier in pre-construction examination of sites in the densely populated hospital district of the city. Starting Saturday, hundreds of patients and senior citizens had been relocated from two hospitals in the area.

The bombs were 250kg American and British bombs.

Central Dortmund was bombed heavily in May 1943 as the Allied aerial campaign targeted the industrial Ruhr District. The devices found in the process are either defused or destroyed in controlled demolitions.

Two World War II bombs were successfully dismantled today in the West German city of Dortmund, hours after thousands of people from the area were evacuated, officials said.

The largest such evacuation also took place in Frankfurt, in September 2017 and affected 65,000 people. Evacuation is required because of old bombs found near residential buildings.
